House with a Story.
The Story Begins.
We have all been drawn to a certain place —a place along our daily commute or just a little off of a well known path. We may have wondered, “Who lives there?,” or “Who did?” We may have mused about what would it be like to set foot inside those large, double doors. Maybe the garden is immaculate at this chosen space of yours; maybe it’s particularly inviting. Maybe this property’s garden has gone wild. There might be a porch that wraps around the house just so, reminding you of your grandmother’s home. Maybe the house is sleek and contemporary and looks like it is straight out of a James Bond movie. Or maybe the draw is to an old, cobbled home that looks disheveled and full of intrigue.
Today, you are going to write your “Story of a Home.”
Things Needed:
1. Paper
2. Writing utensil
Find your favorite spot, and start to write.
What do you think? Does this choice property of yours beg for a story with an extravagant plot, or will this story of yours be a short poem? Will your write up read like a discovered paragraph ripped out of a sci-fi thriller? Is it a chapter from a history book? Is it a novel? Or, is it an advertisement in the local paper?
The choice is up to you, but I would like for you to do two different write ups about your particular property.
The rough categories are:
1. A paragraph
2. A poem
3. A long/ish form story
Things to Consider:
Think about who may live there. Are you compelled to do some character development in your write up, or would you simply like to focus on how this place makes you feel and leave the inhabitants out entirely?
Really play with this assignment. You are free to take as much or as little time on this as you would like. If you feel as though this may turn into a big project, break it down into manageable pieces. Remember those brainstorming activities from your youth to get you started, and mark your calendar with a rough draft “due by” date, if you thrive with a bit more structure.
